The University of Georgia's Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies website is well organized. Information concerning student opportunities, study abroad, community outreach, publications/research, faculty/staff and the certificate program are available on the main page of the web site.
Courses Offered
The Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies offers an undergraduate certificate for the program. Requirements include 16 hours of course work including Language Proficiency, classes in a Socio-econ-historical Period, and Social Sciences and must be approved by the CLACS director or program coordinator. A final term paper is also required to receive a diploma.
Program Structure
There is not a major or a minor currently available for the Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program but is a possibility in the near future. A certificate may be achieved by completing the course requirements, taking part in study abroad programs and volunteer work with the Hispanic/Latino community.
Demographics
According to the 2000 census for the state of Georgia there were 8,186,453 people overall with 5.3% identifying as Latino or Hispanic origin, 2.4% identifying as some other race and 1.4% identifying as two or more races. At the University of Georgia 2% of the freshman class identified as Hispanic.
